AhichhatraLocation:-
It is located in Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh). It was the capital of Northern Panchal (one the 16 mahajanapadas during Buddhism) in the sixth century BC.
Naming:-
Ahi means snake (Naga in Sanskrit). Nagas were a group of ancient people who worshiped serpents. The word khsetra means region in Sanskrit. This implies that Ahi-kshetra was a region of Nagas.
Role in History:-
All we know and watch in Mahabharat that Ahichchhatra was formerly under the Panchala king Drupada (Draupadi's father). After many years Dronacharya defeated Drupada with help of his disciple Arjuna.
Ashwatthama (Drona's son) probably ruled the kingdom being subordinate to the rulers of Hastinapura.
Famous for:-
Ashok, the great built a huge stupa called Ahichatra here. Before the rise of the Guptas of the site, this city was also famous as the center of power of Nagavanshi kings. It is known of the coins obtained from the excavation here and on the basis that this city was a famous Indian businessman.
