Arikamedu, A historical place

Arikamedu was a famous and ancient harbor located on the Coromandal coast, 3 km from Pondicherry. Arikamedu is called Pedoc in Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. 


Trade:-

Arikamedu was a prosperous trading port city on the eastern seaboard, having close trade relations with China, Malaya and Rome with perfumes, spices and silk  From Rome, large quantities of gold came to India in exchange for these items.


Historical Points:-


Many Roman remains of pottery have been found from Arikamedu in 200 AD.  Many Roman items have been found in the relics from Arikamedu, including two-handled urns of wine, Roman lamps & glasses
